Interview with Eva Mª Figueroa, HR Talent Manager at Astellas

“For us, Training Express is a training partner”

What is the relevance of languages in the pharmaceutical industry?

Eva Figueroa (E.F.): In today’s world, language skills are vital, not only in the pharmaceutical industry, but in the business world in general. Professionals must be ready for the increasingly international nature of companies in a globalized market. We mustn’t forget that English is the quintessential global communication language, and being fluent in it is essential.

What is your language training policy?

E.F.: We develop our programs on a yearly basis, combining different training models (Blended Learning, telephone sessions, seminars…), aligning each participant’s needs with the company’s objectives. We strive to add value by making quality the most distinctive trait of our programs, combining customized training, innovation and motivation. If, through our efforts, our employees commit to the program, we consider we have made an excellent long-term investment.

How many or your employees are currently participating in the language training program?

E.F.: Practically all the employees based in our offices take part in the English program. This year we have also offered it to sales management team.

Do you think the staff views language training in a positive light?

E.F.: In our case, they not only see it as a positive measure, but as a necessary one in order to do their job properly. For this reason, they are very critical with the training they receive, which helps us detect areas for improvement and keep striving for excellence in our training programs.

For us, this was an essential factor when it came to choosing a language training company. They had to offer us not only customized, quality training, but also the means to monitor and control it on a regular basis.

How long have you been working with Training Express?

E.F.: We started working with them last year. They didn’t just offer us a comprehensive language training proposal that adapted to our needs and expectations; they also proposed the option of introducing innovative solutions like their online methodology and telephone sessions to supplement our program, so we decided to make the change.

What services do they provide? How do you rate them?

E.F.: They offer us a global management service, with constant support and close communication with the Training Express team. For us, this was an essential factor when it came to choosing a language training company. They had to offer us not only customized, quality training, but also the means to monitor and control it on a regular basis.

¿How do you measure results?

E.F.: We determined each student’s level at the beginning of the program, as well as the level they were meant to reach, designing course content based on that. From the start, we used a continuous assessment system based on different indicators: attendance, satisfaction surveys throughout the year, periodic reports from Training Express, constant communication with learners and trainers, and teacher assessment, etc.

What aspects of your experience with Training Express would you highlight?

E.F.: For us, Training Express is a partner, another member of our team as far as language training is concerned. This helped us connect from the start, and made it easy to line up what we wanted with what they had to offer in order to design an attractive and challenging project.

What do you expect from this coming year?

E.F.: We hope to offer a training program that generates interest in learning and motivates participants to improve their language skills, so they keep requesting initiatives like these. That way, we will be better prepared to meet the present and future demands of our organization.
