What is the relevance of languages at Servier?
Enrique Rodriguez (E.R.): They are of primary importance. We are an international company, and languages are used every day.
What are the strategic guidelines behind your language training policy?
E.R.: There are two clear principles. First, never let anyone stay at the “I manage to make myself understood” or “With what I know, I can get by” stage, because, in a professional setting, it’s not enough to just get the general idea. And, second, let practice take precedence over theory: fewer years in the classroom and more minutes of actual use of English to get over any feeling of embarrassment or “stage fright”.
How many Servier employees are learning languages? What is their profile?
E.R.: We have 70 employees learning languages. Mainly, those employees in frequent contact with international teams (research, marketing, training and manufacturing).
How do your employees rate the training program?
E.R.: Very highly. Judging by the results of our surveys, employees are extremely satisfied.Throughout these eleven years, the people at Training Express have demonstrated that they are true to their word, they strive for excellence, and they offer a personalized service.
Do you think the staff sees language training as a motivator?
E.R.: I think so. I have to say that sometimes I worry that the motivational aspect may take precedence over the educational role of the program. Training programs should never be considered a fringe benefit.
